Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend statement on the protest at HMP Bronzefield

Lisa Townsend said: “I have been kept updated on the situation today at HMP Bronzefield and I utterly condemn the actions of those involved in the disorder and criminality that has taken place.

“I am a firm believer in the right to peaceful and lawful protest but I am afraid some of the scenes we have witnessed today have gone far beyond what is acceptable.

“A prison officer and police officer have been assaulted, prison transport has been disrupted and the road was blocked resulting in medical assistance for one of those injured being delayed.

“This sort of behaviour cannot be tolerated and I fully support the action our policing teams have taken today to tackle this criminality in very challenging circumstances.

“Our police resources are precious and our officers time is much better spent policing in our communities rather than having to deal with situations like this.”
