PCC welcomes police progress highlighted in recent HMIC assessment

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey David Munro has praised the progress made by Surrey Police in its service to the public highlighted today by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC).

The HMIC carry out annual inspections on police forces across the country into the Effectiveness, Efficiency and Legitimacy (PEEL) in which they keep people safe and reduce crime.

In an overall PEEL assessment released today, the HMIC said it was pleased with the progress by Surrey Police in its overall performance over the last year and praised the substantial improvements made in protecting vulnerable people.

The Force improved its previous HMIC rating from ‘requiring improvement’ to ‘good’ in both the Efficiency and Effectiveness strands while also maintaining its ‘good’ rating for Legitimacy.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, David Munro said: “”It is my role on behalf of the county’s residents to make sure they get the best policing service possible.

“So I am delighted with today’s overall assessment from the HMIC which has recognised the hard work officers and staff have put in over the last year to address those serious concerns that were previously raised.

“The Force has made great strides in understanding and meeting the demands of modern policing and I am particularly heartened by the substantial improvements made in protecting vulnerable people.

“Although great progress has been made, there is always more to do to make Surrey a safer place for the people that live and work here.

“I am committed to working with the Chief Constable to ensure we maintain our current course and address those areas such as the investigation of less serious crime and developing its understanding on changing demand.”
