PCC welcomes initial steps in coronavirus recovery plan

Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner David Munro has welcomed the limited relaxation of coronavirus restrictions this week, reflecting gradual but tangible progress in the fight against the virus.

Following the release of the government plan earlier today, the PCC urges Surrey’s communities to continue to observe social distancing, and to stay at home where possible.

He said: “I stand with residents across Surrey in welcoming this indication of what the path to a ‘new normal’ might look like in the coming months, that includes small changes to the rules for exercise and travel by members of the same household. This is an important step that will help to ease anxiety during this uncertain period – but we must all continue to do our bit by keeping a safe distance from others.

“I want to thank every individual in Surrey who has shown the resilience to make these measures effective, and are continuing to make the sacrifices needed to keep us all safe. I’m especially grateful to the officers and staff of Surrey Police, who are continuing to strike the right balance in policing our communities under extraordinary circumstances.

“I cannot stress enough, that we must keep going to protect those in our communities who are vulnerable, and guard against a new surge in cases.”

The plan includes a partial relaxation of restrictions on exercise and travel to take effect from Wednesday, and contains further guidance for workers in some industries to travel to their place of employment where it is not possible to work at home, and additional measures are taken to ensure this is safe.

Social distancing advice remain in place. Surrey Police is continuing to advise individuals to stay at home, and work from home where possible, to avoid a new rise in cases. The Force will continue to explain and encourage the measures outlined by government to slow the spread of coronavirus, protect the NHS and communities in Surrey.
