PCC contributes £1,700 to Stephen Lawrence Bursary

Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner David Munro has awarded £1,700 to a Stephen Lawrence Bursary to support the professional development of Black, Asian and Mixed Ethnicity (BAME) police officers and staff.

Stephen Lawrence was just 18 years old when he was murdered in an unprovoked racial attack.

The National Black Police Association has established the bursary that will support a three month learning programme for individuals to contribute more effectively to their communities, and to inform research that will help promote equality and diversity in forces across the UK.

The bursary will run for four years, supported by funding from PCC Offices across the country.

Surrey PCC and Association of Police and Crime Commissioners national lead for equality and diversity, David Munro said: “We must reflect the diversity of Surrey’s communities to provide the best possible policing service, and I am proud of the progress we are making towards this.

“This bursary in Stephen’s memory is an opportunity to confirm our commitment to a

policing environment where every individual has the equal opportunity to thrive, and to the continued investment in the diverse individuals that make Surrey Police and our communities special.”

Surrey Police are set to welcome an additional 122 officers and staff to the force in 2020 as a result of increased funding from the PCC’s Office, bolstered by a further 78 police officers funded by central government in 2020-21.

Individuals of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. For more information, visit: https://www.surrey.police.uk/jobs
