“Plan ahead and enjoy yourselves safely” – PCC asks pub-goers to respect safety measures ahead of this weekend’s reopening

The Police and Crime Commissioner David Munro has asked Surrey pub-goers to plan ahead and respect safety measures put in place as the county prepares for the reopening of the hospitality industry this weekend.

The PCC says he wants people to enjoy themselves safely as some pubs, bars and restaurants open their doors for the first time since March as part of the latest easing of the coronavirus lockdown.

Extra resources will be in place for what is expected to be a busy weekend for Surrey Police and the PCC has asked anyone heading out to take personal responsibility and be mindful of the restrictions that are still in place.

He said it was crucial the public support hospitality staff and their local police teams by planning ahead as establishments introduce measures to ensure social distancing such as pre-booked tables and timeslots which may leave people disappointed if they turn up unannounced.

PCC David Munro said: “Going to the pub is one of the many freedoms denied to us all since March so of course many people will be eager to venture out and enjoy a drink this weekend or in the coming days and weeks.

“The vast majority of Surrey residents have closely followed the government’s Covid-19 guidance over the past few months and I am confident that will continue as we enter the next phase of restrictions being eased from this Saturday.

“But we are still in a global pandemic and don’t want to throw away all the hard work that has been put in to stop the spread of this virus.

“I have spoken to the Chief Constable and Surrey Police are expecting a busy weekend but have got plans in place. They have been liaising with licensed premises over recent days and there will be extra police resources on hand to ensure everyone enjoys their weekend safely.

“We are not yet back to normality and many establishments will not be reopening straight away. Those that are will have arrangements in place such as pre-booking spaces in advance so the experience for people returning to licenced premises will feel very different.

“I would urge anyone heading out to the pubs and restaurants when they reopen to plan ahead, be supportive of landlords and staff and your local policing teams and respect the measures put in place to keep everyone safe.”
